Administering medication
Giving a pill is not a reserved act. If a medicine has to be given by injection, this is a reserved act. Whether the administration of medicines is a reserved act therefore depends on how the medicine is administered. Prescribing medicines is also a reserved act and falls under the Medicines Act.

Inject
An injection can be given into body tissue or into a blood vessel. In addition to a drug, a filler or saline solution can also be injected. Nurses are allowed to independently give injections into veins, muscle tissues and subcutaneous tissues within their area of expertise.

Punctures
During a puncture, fluid or tissue is removed from an organ with a needle. In principle, this is an action that is performed by a doctor or a specialist. Nurses are allowed to perform a number of punctures, such as the heel prick on babies and blood tests.

Catheterization
With the placement of a catheter, substances are inserted or removed in body cavities, an example of this is an IV. Nurses are allowed to insert a catheter into the bladder of adults. Nurses are also allowed to insert a gastric tube or IV.

Surgical procedures
